About The Symposium
The 7th Annual POHER Medical Research and Mentorship Symposium brings together medical students and early-career health professionals from across Africa to foster collaboration, ignite research interest, and strengthen mentorship networks. This dynamic event is hosted by the Pan-African Organization for Health, Education, and Research (POHER) in partnership with the Copperbelt University School of Medicine (CBUSOM), South Sudan Medical Students’ Association (SSMSA), the University of Lusaka (UNILUS) Medical Student Association, Cameroon Medical Students Association (CAMSA) and Bowen Association of Medical Students (BAMS).
The inaugural symposium was held in August 2019, at The Copperbelt University School of Medicine. The event hosted over 300 students from various medical schools around Zambia and featured presentations from local and international researchers, including doctors in various specialties who enlightened students on the various paths and opportunities they could take after medical school. The symposium encourages students as key stakeholders in the future of our health system to solve the many health challenges that we face through evidence-based practice and research.

Symposium Pillars: Research, Mentorship & Leadership in Africa

Collaborative Medical Research
We focus on bringing students in Africa, allied health care professionals together to create research that matters. It’s all about sharing ideas, working across borders, and building partnerships that last beyond the symposium.

Mentorship and Career Development
We focus on the power of mentorship to shape our journeys in medicine. From choosing a career path to building connections, it’s about learning from those ahead of us and lifting each other up.

Health Education and Leadership in Africa
We focus on growing leaders who will shape the future of healthcare in Africa. Whether it’s through education, innovation, or advocacy, we believe medical students and allied health professionals have a powerful role to play.
