PROJECTS
POHER is involved in projects locally and internationally.
The POHER COVID19 Relief Fund: The ongoing campaign is seeking to raise funds for $50,000 to educate communities and donate equipment for testing and personal protective equipment (PPE) for our frontline workers in Zambia.
ZAC2020 – ZED Africa Collaborative (ZAC) is a team of dynamic professionals from varied backgrounds based both in Zambia and the Diaspora who are committed to advancing health, social and economic development in Zambia. ZAC was initially formed as a response to the raging effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Zambia. ZAC members convened together with the focus of contributing towards preventing transmission and decreasing the trends of COVID19. With time, the team recognized the urgent need for empowering Zambia’s economically vulnerable communities not only against the COVID19 pandemic but also mitigation of social –economic burdens in the general population. ZAC aims to promote long-term partnership that will contribute towards socioeconomic and health needs in Zambia. The lead partner for ZAC is the Pan African Organization for Health and Education Research (POHER).
PAST PROJECTS:
Flyspec Fundraiser: Flyspec is a unique and established flying medical charity in Zambia, Southern Africa. Operating principally by air, FlySpec is the only orthopedic, plastic and reconstructive service, reaching patients in the most remote areas of Zambia. No charges are made for any treatment given.
In 2014, POHER organized a fundraiser to raise funds for the organization.
The No Sex for Fish (NSFF) Initiative – Kenya: NSSF was started by the Victoria Institute for Research on Environment and Development in Kisumu County, Kenya to address the high level of HIV/AIDS around Lake Victoria beaches. The trade of fish for sex, known as “jaboya” in the local Luo language, stems from poverty in the region. Women who cannot afford to feed their families usually trade sex for fish. This ingrained practice has contributed to the spread of HIV throughout the region.
POHER organized a fundraiser to support the at risk women in this region.
Scholarship fund for orphaned children - Nigeria: POHER funded a scholarship to support an orphan through her high school education in Nigeria.
Pache Pache Project, Lusaka - Zambia: POHER raised funds to build a community center for widows and orphans in collaboration with the Justice for Widows and Orphans Project (JWOP).
African Refugee and Immigration Services (ARIS) - St Louis, Missouri: POHER worked with this remarkable organization in St Louis for several years to provide a broad range of services to African immigrants and refugees in the area.
